After the first defeat of the season, the blues have bounced back to fine form winning four matches and drawing one. The win included the 2-1 win over Tottenham and the recent win against Stoke City and the only draw was against Arsenal. So far this season, Conte have tried several line-ups and there had been dramas on and off the pitch including several red cards and yellow cards. Though, Conte is enjoying a good run presently, he should however be more concern on sustainability especially with the forward players. Let’s take a look at 2 things Conte needs to work on.
The Willian-Pedro line-up
Over and over, Willian has always played better as a substitute than when starting up a game. Pedro on the other hand seems balanced, that is, on his promising days he is excellent both when he starts a game or when he is substituted. Arguably, both players are the fastest in the team as they exact their energy in sprints. But so far, when these two players starts a game the striker tends to suffer, Willian especially made more runs than being creative in a match as that was seen in the game against Arsenal which led to a draw on a day Pedro was not at his best too. It happened again against Stoke, a game that took the saving grace of substitute Fabregas and Hazard to get Morata engaged and to make the blues more possessive. But on days when willian comes in as a substitute, his pace seems to kill the already tired defense and his impact is felt almost immediately. Subsequently, I hope Conte will correct this and start with either of the two pacy forwards, starting Pedro preferably.
High Rate of Indiscipline
This season so far, the blues discipline level has ran off. Chelsea started the first game of the season with two red cards, one for the skipper and the other for Fabregas, after which several other players have been given yellow cards majorly for complaining or saying abusive speech. You can also flash back to the crime Luiz committed against Arsenal which led to a straight red. Luis should have released the ball a long time ago, but he delayed the ball till he lost it and the next thing he did was to stud the opponent. That is high level of indiscipline. The quiet Marcos Alonso has now become someone having a yellow card for shouting on the ref and making inappropriate gestures against the refree’s decision. Some other players in the squad were guilty of this too. In the light of this, Conte needs to improve the discipline level in the team if he does not want match suspensions to be the order of the day in his squad.
